Third-party donation or third-party reproduction refers to the use of eggs, sperms, or embryos donated by a third person or donor. In most cases, the donors are anonymous to recipients. Some couples may confront severe problems with the quality of their eggs or sperm. If a couple has failed to conceive naturally or with IVF or ICSI, they can opt for donor eggs or donor sperms. In this procedure, healthy donor eggs are fertilized with anonymous donor sperm from a sperm bank. Following this, the fertilized eggs are placed in the mother’s womb.
The couple needs to understand that their child will not be their genetic offspring but will be a biological offspring. The genetic makeup of the child will resemble the anonymous donor. Hence, a lot of couples are usually skeptical about the procedure. An egg donation is a process in which eggs from a healthy young woman are fertilized with the sperm of the patient’s husband. The resulting fertilized egg or embryo is transferred into the patient’s womb. The donation ensures that the couples get a child and the woman also experiences motherhood.
The donor in this procedure is usually anonymous. The donor is selected after a series of medical and genetic tests. Once fit for donation, the ovaries of the donor are stimulated to produce several eggs. These eggs are then retrieved and frozen for utilization.
Similar to egg donation, sperm donation is a process in which the donor’s sperm is injected into the mother’s uterus through either IUI or IVF. This procedure is usually recommended for couples when the sperms are not naturally fit to fertilize.
The donor sperm is retrieved, collected, and registered in dedicated sperm banks. The donor and his sperm are thoroughly screened for genetic disorders and infections before passing on to the doctors.
